Aakash is a tablet computer designed in India as a low cost but full functioning device in order to attempt to bridge the digital divide. The commercial version of the aakash tablet will be retailed under the brand name UbiSlate.The original prototype named Sakshat was unveiled in 2009, purported as a "$10 laptop".
The tablet was formally launched on 5 October 2011 as Aakash, made by the UK-based company DataWind. Aakash tablet will be sold to the Government of India at $50. Aakash tablet is expected to be sold for $60 in the retail stores. The Aakash tablet has been developed as part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that aims to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities on the subcontinent in an e-learning program via an existing Sakshat portal.
The low-cost Aakash tablets would be manufactured by a UK-based company, called Datawind that brought us the PocketSurfer, a while back that didn't seemto make much of an impact. A spokesperson from the HR ministry said, “aakash tablets will cost 2 200 rupees (US$45) and the first batch of 500 tablets will be handed over to students after the release. Initially, 700 Akash tablets will be made every day and we expect the production to pick up when more companies join in to manufacture the device.
The hope is that the Aakash tablet will increase the literacy rate and develop the technological skills which are much-needed in this and other developing countries.India is doing its best to increase its 62% literacy rate as it is lags behind other BRICS countries like China. China has a literacy rate of 92%.

It runs on Android 2.2 but has a Getjar marketplace instead of Android's A 366MHz processor
Wi-fi enabled only.
Later models will be GPRS and SIM enabled.

Memory: 256MB RAM Storage: 2GB Flash memory + 2GB Micro SD card (expandable to 32GB) Battery: 2100mAh. It will lasts1.5 to 2 hours when watching HD videos and 3 hours on average use. Image viewer supported formats: PNG, JPG, BMP and GIF Supported audio formats: MP3, AAC, AC3, WAV, WMA Supported
video formats: MPEG2, MPEG4, AVI, FLV
